Curating Ideas: Research and Writing Support

Many interesting projects struggle not because they are based on weak ideas, but because those ideas are difficult to organise and express clearly.

I work with students, researchers, writers and practitioners to help them develop, structure and articulate ideas for texts and research projects related to architecture, landscape and visual culture. My role is not simply to edit texts, but to act as an informed interlocutor who helps clarify ideas, shape arguments and organise complex material.

I describe this process as curating ideas: bringing together research, images, theory and personal insights, and arranging them so that a coherent narrative emerges.

With a background in architectural practice, photography, teaching and architectural history, I am particularly interested in projects that engage with architecture, landscape, visual culture and spatial experience.

What I Offer

Thesis Mentoring

For architecture and art-history students developing bachelor’s, master’s or diploma theses. Support may include:

  • clarifying the research question
  • structuring the argument
  • connecting design and research
  • developing a clear narrative
  • feedback on drafts

Manuscript Development

For researchers, architects and writers working on articles, essays or books, I can help with:

  • shaping the conceptual structure of a text
  • refining arguments
  • reorganising complex material
  • preparing texts for publication

Research Conversations

Sometimes what is most useful is simply a thoughtful conversation with someone outside the project. I offer one-to-one discussions in which we explore ideas, identify conceptual problems and develop new directions. These sessions can be particularly helpful in the early stages of a project.

How we work together

Projects usually begin with a conversation in which we discuss the aims of the work and the stage it has reached. Depending on the project, our collaboration may involve:

  • detailed feedback on written drafts
  • conversations about structure and argument
  • ongoing mentoring over several weeks or months
  • I work in both English and German

Background

I am an architect and researcher with over twenty years of experience in architectural practice, teaching and writing. Alongside architectural work in the UK, Germany and Switzerland, I have taught architectural theory and design at institutions including the University of Sheffield and the University of East London. I am currently completing a PhD in art history at Philipps-Universität Marburg on the ways in which photography shapes our understanding of architecture.

My own work explores the relationships between architecture, landscape, images and subjective experiences of place.
