Pattern / Language (I)

Photography, 2012-ongoing

The title of the photo-project is a play on that of Christopher Alexander’s 1977 book A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction. As in Alexander’s book, it explores built constellations in different scales which arise out of incremental additions and adaptations. Unlike Alexander, however, it does not hark back to a vernacular ‘timeless way of building’; the patterns it explores are historically contingent and absorb modernity. The extent to which these patterns are embedded in the structures themselves, or are constructed by the camera, remains, however, open.
